Sources of PMG Problems
Troubles Opening PMG Files
Adobe InDesign is Not Installed
When you double-click your PMG file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Adobe InDesign for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Adobe InDesign installed, and you know of another program to open your PMG file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Adobe InDesign is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of Adobe InDesign won't support your PageMaker Group File file. If you do not have the proper version Adobe InDesign (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a PageMaker Group File file version that was created by a newer version of Adobe InDesign than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your PMG, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of PMG file opening issues are due to not having the correct Adobe InDesign version installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening PMGs
Even with the correct version of Adobe InDesign installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PMGs. If you are still having problems opening PMG files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- Invalid PMG file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The PMG file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Adobe InDesign that did not fully complete
- Your PMG file is corrupted (issues with your PageMaker Group File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PMG
- Hardware related to PMGs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your PageMaker Group File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
