PQ File Complications
Common PQ Opening Problems
Progress Quest is Not Installed
When trying to open your PQ file, you get the error "Can't Open PQ File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Progress Quest missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PQ with Progress Quest, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PQ, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Progress Quest Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Progress Quest won't support your Progress Quest Save File file. Visit the Eric Fredricksen website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Progress Quest. Your Progress Quest Save File file was probably created by a newer release of Progress Quest than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PQ file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right Progress Quest version on your computer can cause problems opening PQ files.
Additional PQ Opening Issues
Errors opening Progress Quest Save File files can still occur even with the latest Progress Quest software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening PQ files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for PQ are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the PQ file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Progress Quest that did not fully complete
- The PQ itself is corrupted
- The PQ is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to PQs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Progress Quest Save File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
