Troubleshoot STE Files
Troubles Opening STE Files
Microsoft Notepad is Not Installed
If you attempt to load your STE file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open STE Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the STE file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your STE, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Microsoft Notepad
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Notepad installed that's incompatible with your Dreamweaver Site Settings File type. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Notepad from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your Dreamweaver Site Settings File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your STE, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Regardless, most of the STE file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
Other Causes of STE File Opening Problems
Errors opening Dreamweaver Site Settings File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening STE files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- Windows Registry STE file paths that are incorrect
- The STE file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the STE format
- Your STE file is corrupted (issues with your Dreamweaver Site Settings File file itself)
- STE file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to STEs has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Dreamweaver Site Settings File files
