XCI Troubleshooting

Troubles Opening XCI Files

Adobe Reader Not Present

Double-clicking your XCI file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open XCI File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Adobe Reader isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your XCI file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Wrong Version of Adobe Reader is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Adobe Reader Font Mapping File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Adobe Reader (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of XCI file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the XCI file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Adobe Reader installed.

Other XCI File Issues

Even with the correct version of Adobe Reader installed, you can still experience difficulties opening XCIs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading XCI files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for XCI
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry XCI description
  • Adobe Reader or another XCI application experienced a flawed installation
  • Something has caused file corruption of your XCI
  • XCI file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Hardware associated with XCI has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Adobe Reader Font Mapping File file successfully

Poll: Do you use a computer or mobile device more often to view files?
