XFT File Complications
Common XFT Opening Problems
Missing ChiWriter
When you double-click your XFT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have ChiWriter installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the XFT file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens XFT files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Obsolete Version of ChiWriter
Your ChiWriter Printer Font file is incompatible with ChiWriter because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of ChiWriter from Cay Horstmann is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a ChiWriter Printer Font file version that was created by a newer version of ChiWriter than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your XFT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XFT files are due to having the wrong version of ChiWriter installed.
Other XFT File Opening Causes
Errors opening ChiWriter Printer Font files can still occur even with the latest ChiWriter software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening XFT files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- XFT file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the XFT file description from the Registry by mistake
