Troubles Opening XMO Files

Missing Adobe Authorware

If you attempt to load your XMO file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open XMO Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to Adobe Authorware missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your XMO with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XMO, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Adobe Authorware is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Adobe Authorware isn't able to open your Adobe Authorware Movie Driver file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Adobe Authorware if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Adobe Authorware Movie Driver file was created by a different (newer) version of Adobe Authorware than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of XMO file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XMO files are due to having the wrong version of Adobe Authorware installed.

Other XMO File Opening Causes

Errors opening Adobe Authorware Movie Driver files can still occur even with the latest Adobe Authorware software installed on your computer. Other XMO opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:

  • Windows Registry XMO file paths that are incorrect
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the XMO file inside the Windows Registry
  • Corrupt install of Adobe Authorware or other XMO-related program
  • Something has caused file corruption of your XMO
  • Your XMO is infected with malware
  • XMO-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Adobe Authorware Movie Driver files
