XMP File Complications
Common XMP Opening Problems
Microsoft Notepad Disappeared
When trying to open your XMP file, you get the error "Can't Open XMP File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Notepad missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your XMP with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XMP, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Microsoft Notepad Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Notepad won't support your Extensible Metadata Platform File file. Download the latest Microsoft Notepad version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your Extensible Metadata Platform File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the XMP file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the XMP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
Other Causes of XMP File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Notepad will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening XMP files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- Invalid XMP file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry XMP description
- Microsoft Notepad or another XMP application experienced a flawed installation
- Your XMP can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- The XMP is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your XMP file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Extensible Metadata Platform File file
