Troubleshoot XPJ Files

Troubles Opening XPJ Files

Missing Adobe RoboHelp

When you double-click your XPJ file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Adobe RoboHelp missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your XPJ because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your XPJ file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Adobe RoboHelp is Out-of-Date

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a RoboHelp HTML Project file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Adobe RoboHelp (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your RoboHelp HTML Project file was created by a different (newer) version of Adobe RoboHelp than what's installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your XPJ, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Regardless, most of the XPJ file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Adobe RoboHelp installed.

Additional XPJ Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Adobe RoboHelp will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening XPJ files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:

  • XPJ file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Deletion of the XPJ file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of Adobe RoboHelp or other XPJ-related program
  • XPJ file corruption
  • The XPJ is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers for XPJ-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your RoboHelp HTML Project file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
