Troubleshooting Problems Opening MBK Files
Frequent MBK Opening Issues
dBase is Not Installed
When you double-click your MBK file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because dBase isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your MBK because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have dBase installed, and you know of another program to open your MBK file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated dBase
It is possible that your version of dBase isn't able to open your dBASE IV Multiple Index Backup File file due to incompatibility. Visit the dBase, LLC website to download (or purchase) the latest version of dBase. The primary cause of this problem is that your dBASE IV Multiple Index Backup File file was created by a different (newer) version of dBase than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of MBK file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the MBK file opening problems relate to not having the right version of dBase installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading MBK Files
Even with the correct version of dBase installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MBKs. Other MBK opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for MBK are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the MBK file in the Windows registry
- dBase or another MBK application experienced a flawed installation
- MBK file corruption
- MBK file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware associated with MBK has outdated drivers
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open dBASE IV Multiple Index Backup File files
