Common Problems Opening MSL Files
Microsoft Notepad Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MSL Files" when trying to open your MSL. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your MSL file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MSL files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Microsoft Notepad Version
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Notepad isn't able to open your Mapping Specification Language File file due to incompatibility. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Notepad. This issue mainly occurs when your Mapping Specification Language File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than you have on your PC.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your MSL file and clicking "Properties".
Primarily, problems experienced when opening MSL files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your computer.
Other MSL File Issues
Although you might already have Microsoft Notepad or another MSL-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Mapping Specification Language File files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MSL files. Problems unrelated to software:
- MSL file type Registry entries are wrong
- The MSL file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MSL format
- Your MSL can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your MSL has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with MSL has outdated drivers
