NEF File Complications
Typical NEF Opening Challenges
Missing MacPhun ColorStrokes
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open NEF Files" when trying to open your NEF. When this happens, it is commonly due to MacPhun ColorStrokes missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your NEF with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have MacPhun ColorStrokes installed, and you know of another program to open your NEF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated MacPhun ColorStrokes
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of MacPhun ColorStrokes installed that's incompatible with your Nikon Electronic Format Camera RAW Image type. If you've got the wrong version of MacPhun ColorStrokes installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Nikon Electronic Format Camera RAW Image file was probably created by a newer release of MacPhun ColorStrokes than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Investigate your NEF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the NEF file opening problems relate to not having the right version of MacPhun ColorStrokes installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading NEF Files
Even with the correct version of MacPhun ColorStrokes installed, you can still experience difficulties opening NEFs. If you are still having problems opening NEF files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for NEF
- The NEF file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of MacPhun ColorStrokes that did not fully complete
- Your NEF file is corrupted (issues with your Nikon Electronic Format Camera RAW Image file itself)
- The NEF is infected with a virus
- Drivers associated with NEF software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Nikon Electronic Format Camera RAW Image file
