BTX File Complications

Issues Opening BTX Files

SmartWare Isn't There

Double-clicking your BTX file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open BTX File". Customarily, this means that SmartWare is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another BTX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Incorrect SmartWare Version

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a SmartWare Backup Text File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the SmartWare Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of SmartWare. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your BTX file and clicking "Properties".

Conclusion: The majority of BTX file opening issues are due to not having the correct SmartWare version installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading BTX Files

Errors opening SmartWare Backup Text File files can still occur even with the latest SmartWare software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening BTX files. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • BTX file type Registry entries are wrong
  • The BTX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the BTX format
  • File corruption affecting your BTX file
  • Your BTX has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to BTXs has device driver corruption
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the SmartWare Backup Text File file
