Understanding XLAM Issues
Typical XLAM Opening Challenges
Microsoft Excel Disappeared
When you double-click your XLAM file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Excel is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your XLAM with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: Another XLAM-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Microsoft Excel is Installed
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Excel Open XML Macro-Enabled Add-In file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Excel installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Excel Open XML Macro-Enabled Add-In file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Excel than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the XLAM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening XLAM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional XLAM Opening Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Excel will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening XLAM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for XLAM
- Unintentional removal of the description of the XLAM file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the XLAM format
- File corruption affecting your XLAM file
- Malware-tainted XLAM file can't be opened
- Hardware related to XLAMs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Excel Open XML Macro-Enabled Add-In file successfully
