STL Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening STL Files
Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software Isn't There
Double-clicking your STL file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open STL File". Usually, this is because you do not have Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the STL file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: Another STL-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software Version
In other instances, your Stereolithography File file version may not be supported by your version of Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software. If you do not have the proper version Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Stereolithography File file was created by a different (newer) version of Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of STL file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of STL file opening issues are due to not having the correct Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software version installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening STLs
Errors opening Stereolithography File files can still occur even with the latest Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening STLs. Problems unrelated to software:
- STL file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the STL file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a STL program, such as Creo Parametric 3D Modeling Software
- File corruption affecting your STL file
- The STL is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to STLs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Stereolithography File file
