Understanding MPP Issues
Common MPP Opening Problems
Missing Serena OpenProj
When trying to open your MPP file, you get the error "Can't Open MPP File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Serena OpenProj missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the MPP file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: Another MPP-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Serena OpenProj is Installed
It is possible that your version of Serena OpenProj isn't able to open your Microsoft Project File file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Serena OpenProj from Serena is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Microsoft Project File file was created by a newer version of Serena OpenProj than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your MPP file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MPP files are due to having the wrong version of Serena OpenProj installed.
Other MPP File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Serena OpenProj will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MPP files. These issues include:
- Invalid MPP file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The MPP file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Serena OpenProj or another MPP application experienced a flawed installation
- MPP file corruption
- Past or present virus infection has affected your MPP
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your MPP file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Project File format
