Sources of WRI Problems
Typical WRI Opening Challenges
LibreOffice is Not Installed
When trying to open your WRI file, you get the error "Can't Open WRI File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have LibreOffice for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your WRI file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Outdated LibreOffice
Your Microsoft Write Document file is incompatible with LibreOffice because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version LibreOffice (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Write Document file version that was created by a newer version of LibreOffice than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your WRI file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening WRI files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other WRI File Issues
You can still experience errors opening WRI files even with the latest version of LibreOffice installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening WRIs. Additional factors include:
- Windows Registry WRI file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the WRI file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the WRI format
- Your WRI can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your WRI is infected with malware
- Hardware related to WRIs has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Microsoft Write Document file
