Understanding MUS Issues

Common MUS Opening Problems

SmartMusic Not Present

When you double-click your MUS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have SmartMusic for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your MUS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MUS files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Outdated SmartMusic

Your Finale Notation File file is incompatible with SmartMusic because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the MakeMusic, Inc. website to download (or purchase) the latest version of SmartMusic. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Investigate your MUS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening MUS files are due to having the incorrect version of SmartMusic installed on your computer.

Other Causes of MUS File Opening Problems

You can still experience errors opening MUS files even with the latest version of SmartMusic installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening MUS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for MUS
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MUS description
  • Invalid installation of a MUS-associated program (eg. SmartMusic)
  • The MUS itself is corrupted
  • Your MUS has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware associated with MUS has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Finale Notation File file successfully
