Troubleshoot REQ Files

Typical REQ Opening Challenges

Microsoft Exchange Server Not Present

When you double-click your REQ file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Exchange Server for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the REQ file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your REQ file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Microsoft Exchange Server is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Microsoft Exchange Server isn't able to open your SSL Certificate Request File file due to incompatibility. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Exchange Server installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your SSL Certificate Request File file was created by a newer Microsoft Exchange Server than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of REQ file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the REQ file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Exchange Server installed.

Other Causes of REQ File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Exchange Server installed, you can still experience difficulties opening REQs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading REQ files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for REQ
  • Corruption of the REQ file description inside the Registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Exchange Server that did not fully complete
  • The REQ itself is corrupted
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your REQ
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your REQ file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your SSL Certificate Request File file
