NITF Troubleshooting

Typical NITF Opening Challenges

Missing GDAL

When trying to open your NITF file, you get the error "Can't Open NITF File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have GDAL installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your NITF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

GDAL is Out-of-Date

Your National Imagery Transmission Format File file is incompatible with GDAL because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of GDAL. This problem is predominately due to having a National Imagery Transmission Format File file version that was created by a newer version of GDAL than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the NITF file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Conclusion: The majority of NITF file opening issues are due to not having the correct GDAL version installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening NITFs

You can still experience errors opening NITF files even with the latest version of GDAL installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening NITF files. Other contributing causes:

  • Invalid NITF file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the NITF file in the Windows registry
  • GDAL or another NITF application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your NITF file is corrupted (issues with your National Imagery Transmission Format File file itself)
  • Your NITF is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with NITF software need to be updated
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your National Imagery Transmission Format File file successfully
