ODC File Summary

There are two file types associated with the ODC File Extension, with the most widely-observed being the Office Data Connection File format. According to our database, six distinct software programs (conventionally, Microsoft Excel developed by Microsoft Corporation) will enable you to view these files. Generally, these files are considered Settings Files, but they can also be Data Files.

Windows, Mac, and iOS operating systems can be used to view ODC files. Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. These files have a Popularity Rating of "Low", meaning they are not very commonly observed on your average hard disk.

Although there is a lot more to know about ODC files, those are the most important details of these types of files. If you are having trouble opening these files, or would like more detailed information, please see our comprehensive information below.

Sources of ODC Problems

Frequent ODC Opening Issues

Microsoft Excel Not Present

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ODC Files" when trying to open your ODC. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Excel for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your ODC with Microsoft Excel, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When another ODC application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrong Version of Microsoft Excel is Installed

It is possible that your version of Microsoft Excel isn't able to open your Office Data Connection File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Excel if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Office Data Connection File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Excel than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your ODC file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Conclusion: The majority of ODC file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Excel version installed.

Other Causes of ODC File Opening Problems

Although you might already have Microsoft Excel or another ODC-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Office Data Connection File files. Other ODC opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for ODC
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the ODC file inside the Windows Registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Excel that did not fully complete
  • ODC file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your ODC
  • Drivers associated with ODC software need to be updated
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Office Data Connection File files
