ODS File Complications

Common ODS Opening Problems

Microsoft Excel Not Present

When you double-click your ODS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Excel is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your ODS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your ODS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Excel

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a OpenDocument Spreadsheet file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Excel version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your OpenDocument Spreadsheet file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Excel than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ODS file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Excel version on your computer can cause problems opening ODS files.

Additional ODS Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Excel will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening ODS files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Invalid ODS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • The ODS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Microsoft Excel or another ODS application experienced a flawed installation
  • ODS file corruption
  • Your ODS is infected with malware
  • ODS-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Windows cannot load your OpenDocument Spreadsheet file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
