Troubleshooting Problems Opening ODM Files

Common Problems Opening ODM Files

Apache OpenOffice Isn't There

You attempt to load your ODM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ODM File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Apache OpenOffice missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your ODM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another ODM application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of Apache OpenOffice

In other instances, your OpenDocument Master Document file version may not be supported by your version of Apache OpenOffice. Download the latest Apache OpenOffice version from the Apache Software Foundation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your OpenDocument Master Document file was created by a newer version of Apache OpenOffice than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ODM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening ODM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other ODM File Issues

Errors opening OpenDocument Master Document files can still occur even with the latest Apache OpenOffice software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening ODM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • ODM file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry ODM description
  • Partial installation of Apache OpenOffice that did not fully complete
  • Your ODM can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your ODM has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers for ODM-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the OpenDocument Master Document file
