Understanding PPSX Issues
Common Problems Opening PPSX Files
Apache OpenOffice Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PPSX Files" when trying to open your PPSX. When this happens, it is commonly due to Apache OpenOffice missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PPSX file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Apache OpenOffice installed, and you know of another program to open your PPSX file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated Apache OpenOffice
Sometimes your installed version of Apache OpenOffice won't support your PowerPoint Open XML Slide Show file. Visit the Apache Software Foundation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Apache OpenOffice. Most of the time your PowerPoint Open XML Slide Show file was created by a newer Apache OpenOffice than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PPSX file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PPSX files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other PPSX File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Apache OpenOffice will resolve your issue. Other PPSX opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid PPSX file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PPSX description
- Corrupt install of Apache OpenOffice or other PPSX-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your PPSX
- The PPSX is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for PPSX-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your PowerPoint Open XML Slide Show file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
