Sources of POTX Problems
Typical POTX Opening Challenges
Microsoft PowerPoint Isn't There
Double-clicking your POTX file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open POTX File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft PowerPoint installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your POTX with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another POTX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of Microsoft PowerPoint is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft PowerPoint installed that's incompatible with your PowerPoint Open XML Presentation Template type. Installing the latest version of Microsoft PowerPoint from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of POTX file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening POTX files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft PowerPoint installed.
Other Causes of POTX File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening POTX files even with the latest version of Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading POTX files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for POTX
- Deletion of the POTX file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the POTX format
- File corruption affecting your POTX file
- Your POTX has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with POTX has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your PowerPoint Open XML Presentation Template file successfully
