Troubleshooting Problems Opening DOCX Files
Issues Opening DOCX Files
LibreOffice Removed
You attempt to load your DOCX file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The DOCX File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have LibreOffice for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your DOCX with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have LibreOffice installed, and you know of another program to open your DOCX file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of LibreOffice is Installed
Your Microsoft Word Open XML Document file is incompatible with LibreOffice because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of LibreOffice installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Microsoft Word Open XML Document file was created by a newer LibreOffice than what you have installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your DOCX, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening DOCX files are due to having the incorrect version of LibreOffice installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading DOCX Files
Assuming you have the right LibreOffice version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening DOCX files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DOCXs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry DOCX file paths that are incorrect
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry DOCX description
- Corrupt install of LibreOffice or other DOCX-related program
- Your DOCX can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your DOCX
- Hardware associated with DOCX has outdated drivers
- Windows cannot load your Microsoft Word Open XML Document file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
