Troubleshoot PDB Files
Issues Opening PDB Files
Missing Microsoft Visual Studio
When trying to open your PDB file, you get the error "Can't Open PDB File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PDB with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another PDB application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Studio isn't able to open your Program Database file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Program Database file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your PDB file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Visual Studio version on your computer can cause problems opening PDB files.
Other Causes of PDB File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening PDB files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening PDB files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- Invalid PDB file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PDB description
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the PDB format
- Something has caused file corruption of your PDB
- Malware-tainted PDB file can't be opened
- Device drivers for PDB-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Program Database files
