Troubles Opening STR Files
dBase is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open STR Files" when trying to open your STR. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have dBase for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your STR with dBase, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another STR application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of dBase is Installed
Your dBASE Structure List Object File file is incompatible with dBase because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of dBase installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your dBASE Structure List Object File file was created by a newer version of dBase than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your STR file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening STR files are due to having the incorrect version of dBase installed on your computer.
Other STR File Issues
Assuming you have the right dBase version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening STR files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening STR files. These issues include:
- STR file type Registry entries are wrong
- The STR file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of dBase that did not fully complete
- Your STR can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your STR
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your STR file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open dBASE Structure List Object File files
