Troubleshooting Problems Opening MXL Files
Troubles Opening MXL Files
Missing MuseScore
When trying to open your MXL file, you get the error "Can't Open MXL File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have MuseScore installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your MXL file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your MXL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of MuseScore
Your Compressed MusicXML File file is incompatible with MuseScore because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of MuseScore if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Compressed MusicXML File file was created by a newer version of MuseScore than you have on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your MXL, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MXL files are due to having the wrong version of MuseScore installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading MXL Files
You can still experience errors opening MXL files even with the latest version of MuseScore installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading MXL files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for MXL are wrong
- Corruption of the MXL file description inside the Registry
- MuseScore or another MXL application experienced a flawed installation
- The MXL itself is corrupted
- Malware-tainted MXL file can't be opened
- MXL-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Compressed MusicXML File file successfully
