COD File Summary

The COD File Extension has two different file types (mostly seen as the Compiled Source Code format) and can be opened with four distinctive software programs, with the dominant related application developed by Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft Visual Studio software). These files can be categorized as Developer Files or Text Files. In the majority of cases, these files will be Developer Files.

Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. COD files have a "Low" Popularity Rating; this means that they are not present on most devices.

Sources of COD Problems

Troubles Opening COD Files

Microsoft Visual Studio Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open COD Files" when trying to open your COD. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the COD file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your COD file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual Studio

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Compiled Source Code file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Compiled Source Code file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than you have on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your COD file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening COD files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.

Other Causes of COD File Opening Problems

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening COD files. If you're still experiencing problems opening COD files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • COD file type Registry entries are wrong
  • The COD file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Invalid installation of a COD-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Studio)
  • Your COD can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your COD
  • Drivers associated with COD software need to be updated
  • Windows cannot load your Compiled Source Code file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
