RM Troubleshooting

Common RM Opening Problems

VLC Media Player Disappeared

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open RM Files" when trying to open your RM. If so, it typically means that you don't have VLC Media Player installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your RM with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: Another RM-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Wrong Version of VLC Media Player is Installed

In other instances, your RealMedia File file version may not be supported by your version of VLC Media Player. If you do not have the proper version VLC Media Player (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your RealMedia File file was created by a different (newer) version of VLC Media Player than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your RM file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening RM files are due to having the wrong version of VLC Media Player installed.

Other Causes of RM File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of VLC Media Player installed, you can still experience difficulties opening RMs. If you are still having problems opening RM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for RM
  • Deletion of the RM file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of VLC Media Player that did not fully complete
  • Your RM can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted RM file can't be opened
  • RM-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your RealMedia File file
