Troubleshoot STM Files
Frequent STM Opening Issues
Microsoft Exchange Server Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open STM Files" when trying to open your STM. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Exchange Server for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your STM with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your STM file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Outdated Microsoft Exchange Server
Your Exchange Streaming Media File file is incompatible with Microsoft Exchange Server because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Microsoft Exchange Server version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your Exchange Streaming Media File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Exchange Server than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of STM file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Primarily, problems experienced when opening STM files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Exchange Server installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening STMs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Exchange Server version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening STM files. If you're still experiencing problems opening STM files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for STM
- Accidental deletion of the description of the STM file in the Windows registry
- Microsoft Exchange Server or another STM application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your STM
- Malware-tainted STM file can't be opened
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your STM file are corrupt or out-of-date
