Troubleshoot IPK Files
Common Problems Opening IPK Files
Missing Debian software (dpkg)
You attempt to load your IPK file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The IPK File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Debian software (dpkg) installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Debian software (dpkg) installed, and you know of another program to open your IPK file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Debian software (dpkg) Requires Update
Your Itsy Package file is incompatible with Debian software (dpkg) because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Debian software (dpkg) version from the Open Source website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Itsy Package file was created by a newer Debian software (dpkg) than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your IPK file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening IPK files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other IPK File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right Debian software (dpkg) version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening IPK files. If you are still having problems opening IPK files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- IPK file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the IPK file inside the Windows Registry
- Debian software (dpkg) or another IPK application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your IPK
- Your IPK is infected with malware
- Hardware associated with IPK has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Itsy Package file successfully
