Troubleshoot STW Files
Common Problems Opening STW Files
Apache OpenOffice Not Present
When trying to open your STW file, you get the error "Can't Open STW File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Apache OpenOffice for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Apache OpenOffice installed, and you know of another program to open your STW file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Apache OpenOffice is Out-of-Date
Your StarOffice Document Template file is incompatible with Apache OpenOffice because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Apache OpenOffice if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your StarOffice Document Template file was created by a different (newer) version of Apache OpenOffice than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the STW file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening STW files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other STW File Opening Causes
Errors opening StarOffice Document Template files can still occur even with the latest Apache OpenOffice software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening STW files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- STW file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the STW file inside the Windows Registry
- Apache OpenOffice or another STW application experienced a flawed installation
- File corruption affecting your STW file
- Malware-tainted STW file can't be opened
- Hardware related to STWs has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your StarOffice Document Template file
