Troubleshooting Problems Opening CAP Files
Common CAP Opening Problems
Microsoft Network Monitor Disappeared
When trying to open your CAP file, you get the error "Can't Open CAP File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Network Monitor missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your CAP file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens CAP files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Microsoft Network Monitor is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Network Monitor Packet Capture Data File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Network Monitor (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Network Monitor Packet Capture Data File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Network Monitor than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your CAP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of CAP file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Network Monitor version installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading CAP Files
You can still experience errors opening CAP files even with the latest version of Microsoft Network Monitor installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening CAPs. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for CAP
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry CAP description
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the CAP format
- Your CAP can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your CAP is infected with malware
- Hardware associated with CAP has outdated drivers
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Network Monitor Packet Capture Data File files
