Troubleshoot TPT Files
Common Problems Opening TPT Files
ThumbsPlus Removed
When you double-click your TPT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have ThumbsPlus for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your TPT with ThumbsPlus, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have ThumbsPlus installed, and you know of another program to open your TPT file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
ThumbsPlus Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a ThumbsPlus Thumbnail Template file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest ThumbsPlus version from the Cerious Software website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your ThumbsPlus Thumbnail Template file was created by a different (newer) version of ThumbsPlus than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of TPT file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the TPT file opening problems relate to not having the right version of ThumbsPlus installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening TPTs
Assuming you have the right ThumbsPlus version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening TPT files. If you're still experiencing problems opening TPT files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:
- TPT file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- The TPT file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- ThumbsPlus or another TPT application experienced a flawed installation
- The TPT itself is corrupted
- TPT file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with TPT software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your ThumbsPlus Thumbnail Template file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
