MXS Troubleshooting

Frequent MXS Opening Issues

Maxwell Render Disappeared

When you double-click your MXS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Maxwell Render for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your MXS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your MXS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Maxwell Render Requires Update

In other instances, your Maxwell Studio Scene File file version may not be supported by your version of Maxwell Render. Installing the latest version of Maxwell Render from Next Limit Technologies is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your MXS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Maxwell Render version on your computer can cause problems opening MXS files.

Additional MXS Opening Issues

You can still experience errors opening MXS files even with the latest version of Maxwell Render installed on your PC. Other MXS opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Windows Registry MXS file paths that are incorrect
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the MXS file in the Windows registry
  • Partial installation of Maxwell Render that did not fully complete
  • The MXS itself is corrupted
  • Your MXS is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with MXS software need to be updated
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Maxwell Studio Scene File file successfully
