Troubleshooting Problems Opening VSS Files
Troubles Opening VSS Files
Microsoft Word 2016 Removed
When you double-click your VSS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Word 2016 for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When another VSS application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect Microsoft Word 2016 Version
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Word 2016 isn't able to open your Visio Stencil File file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Word 2016 from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Visio Stencil File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Word 2016 than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your VSS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Word 2016 version on your computer can cause problems opening VSS files.
Other Causes of VSS File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Word 2016 installed, you can still experience difficulties opening VSSs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading VSS files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:
- Windows Registry VSS file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the VSS file in the Windows registry
- Microsoft Word 2016 or another VSS application experienced a flawed installation
- VSS file corruption
- Your VSS has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to VSSs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Visio Stencil File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
