VD File Complications
Common Problems Opening VD Files
PowerDev Removed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open VD Files" when trying to open your VD. When this happens, it is commonly due to PowerDev missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the VD file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens VD files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Obsolete Version of PowerDev
In other instances, your Visual Designer Project file version may not be supported by your version of PowerDev. Installing the latest version of PowerDev from Interscape is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual Designer Project file was created by a different (newer) version of PowerDev than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your VD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the VD file opening problems relate to not having the right version of PowerDev installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading VD Files
Errors opening Visual Designer Project files can still occur even with the latest PowerDev software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening VDs. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for VD are wrong
- Deletion of the VD file description from the Registry by mistake
- Corrupt install of PowerDev or other VD-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your VD
- Malware-tainted VD file can't be opened
- Drivers associated with VD software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Visual Designer Project files
