Sources of WPD Problems
Troubles Opening WPD Files
Corel WordPerfect X8 Disappeared
When trying to open your WPD file, you get the error "Can't Open WPD File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Corel WordPerfect X8 for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When another WPD application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect Corel WordPerfect X8 Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Corel WordPerfect X8 installed that's incompatible with your WordPerfect Document type. You will need to download a newer version of Corel WordPerfect X8 if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your WordPerfect Document file was created by a newer Corel WordPerfect X8 than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your WPD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening WPD files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional WPD Opening Issues
Although you might already have Corel WordPerfect X8 or another WPD-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening WordPerfect Document files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading WPD files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry WPD file paths that are incorrect
- Unintentional removal of the description of the WPD file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of Corel WordPerfect X8 or other WPD-related program
- WPD file corruption
- The WPD is infected with a virus
- Drivers associated with WPD software need to be updated
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your WordPerfect Document file successfully
