SPF Troubleshooting
Common SPF Opening Problems
VMware vCenter Converter Not Present
When trying to open your SPF file, you get the error "Can't Open SPF File Type". Customarily, this means that VMware vCenter Converter is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your SPF file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have VMware vCenter Converter installed, and you know of another program to open your SPF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect VMware vCenter Converter Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of VMware vCenter Converter installed that's incompatible with your ShadowProtect Full Backup File type. If you do not have the proper version VMware vCenter Converter (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your ShadowProtect Full Backup File file was created by a newer VMware vCenter Converter than what you have installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your SPF, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening SPF files are due to having the wrong version of VMware vCenter Converter installed.
Other Causes of SPF File Opening Problems
Although you might already have VMware vCenter Converter or another SPF-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening ShadowProtect Full Backup File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening SPF files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry SPF file paths that are incorrect
- Corruption of the SPF file description inside the Registry
- Partial installation of VMware vCenter Converter that did not fully complete
- Something has caused file corruption of your SPF
