Sources of BZ2 Problems
Common BZ2 Opening Problems
7-Zip Isn't There
When you double-click your BZ2 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because 7-Zip isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your BZ2 file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your BZ2 file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of 7-Zip
Sometimes your installed version of 7-Zip won't support your Bzip2 Compressed File file. Download the latest 7-Zip version from the Igor Pavlov website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Bzip2 Compressed File file was created by a newer 7-Zip than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the BZ2 file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Conclusion: The majority of BZ2 file opening issues are due to not having the correct 7-Zip version installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading BZ2 Files
Assuming you have the right 7-Zip version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening BZ2 files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening BZ2s. Additional factors include:
- Invalid BZ2 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the BZ2 file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a BZ2 program, such as 7-Zip
- Your BZ2 can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your BZ2 has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers for BZ2-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Bzip2 Compressed File files
