Troubleshoot PGN Files

Troubles Opening PGN Files

Fritz Disappeared

When you double-click your PGN file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Fritz isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your PGN because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When another PGN application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Incorrect Fritz Version

In other instances, your Portable Game Notation File file version may not be supported by your version of Fritz. Installing the latest version of Fritz from Open Source is recommended. Your Portable Game Notation File file was probably created by a newer release of Fritz than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your PGN, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right Fritz version on your computer can cause problems opening PGN files.

More Causes of Problems Opening PGNs

Errors opening Portable Game Notation File files can still occur even with the latest Fritz software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PGN files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • PGN file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the PGN file inside the Windows Registry
  • Defective install of a PGN program, such as Fritz
  • Your PGN file is corrupted (issues with your Portable Game Notation File file itself)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your PGN
  • PGN-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Portable Game Notation File files
