Understanding CRX Issues
Frequent CRX Opening Issues
7-Zip is Not Installed
Double-clicking your CRX file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open CRX File". Usually, this is because you do not have 7-Zip for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens CRX files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect 7-Zip Version
It is possible that your version of 7-Zip isn't able to open your Chrome Extension file due to incompatibility. If you've got the wrong version of 7-Zip installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Chrome Extension file was created by a different (newer) version of 7-Zip than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the CRX file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening CRX files are due to having the incorrect version of 7-Zip installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading CRX Files
Errors opening Chrome Extension files can still occur even with the latest 7-Zip software installed on your computer. Other CRX opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- CRX file type Registry entries are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the CRX file inside the Windows Registry
- 7-Zip or another CRX application experienced a flawed installation
- The CRX itself is corrupted
- Malware-tainted CRX file can't be opened
- Device drivers for CRX-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Chrome Extension file
