Understanding FGD Issues
Typical FGD Opening Challenges
Valve Source SDK is Not Installed
You attempt to load your FGD file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The FGD File Extension". Customarily, this means that Valve Source SDK is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the FGD file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Valve Source SDK installed, and you know of another program to open your FGD file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Valve Source SDK is Installed
Your Forge Game Data File file is incompatible with Valve Source SDK because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version Valve Source SDK (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Forge Game Data File file was created by a different (newer) version of Valve Source SDK than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your FGD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening FGD files are due to having the incorrect version of Valve Source SDK installed on your computer.
Additional FGD Opening Issues
Although you might already have Valve Source SDK or another FGD-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Forge Game Data File files. Other FGD opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for FGD are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the FGD file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Valve Source SDK that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your FGD file
- FGD file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FGD file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Forge Game Data File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
