Sources of PFA Problems
Issues Opening PFA Files
FontForge is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PFA Files" when trying to open your PFA. When this happens, it is commonly due to FontForge missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PFA, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect FontForge Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Printer Font ASCII File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of FontForge if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Printer Font ASCII File file version that was created by a newer version of FontForge than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PFA file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening PFA files are due to having the incorrect version of FontForge installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening PFAs
Assuming you have the right FontForge version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PFA files. If you're still experiencing problems opening PFA files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for PFA are wrong
- Deletion of the PFA file description from the Registry by mistake
- FontForge or another PFA application experienced a flawed installation
- Your PFA file is corrupted (issues with your Printer Font ASCII File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PFA
- Device drivers for PFA-related hardware are out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Printer Font ASCII File file successfully
