Understanding TGZ Issues

Frequent TGZ Opening Issues

7-Zip Disappeared

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open TGZ Files" when trying to open your TGZ. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have 7-Zip for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the TGZ file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens TGZ files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

7-Zip Requires Update

Your Gzipped Tar File file is incompatible with 7-Zip because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest 7-Zip version from the Igor Pavlov website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Gzipped Tar File file version that was created by a newer version of 7-Zip than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your TGZ file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening TGZ files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional TGZ Opening Issues

You can still experience errors opening TGZ files even with the latest version of 7-Zip installed on your PC. Other TGZ opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for TGZ
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the TGZ file in the Windows registry
  • Corrupt install of 7-Zip or other TGZ-related program
  • Your TGZ can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your TGZ has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to TGZs has device driver corruption
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Gzipped Tar File file successfully
