GTAR Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening GTAR Files
Apple Archive Utility Not Present
You attempt to load your GTAR file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The GTAR File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Apple Archive Utility for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Apple Archive Utility installed, and you know of another program to open your GTAR file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Apple Archive Utility is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Apple Archive Utility installed that's incompatible with your GNU Tar Archive type. Installing the latest version of Apple Archive Utility from Apple is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your GNU Tar Archive file was created by a newer version of Apple Archive Utility than you have on your PC.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your GTAR file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: Not having the right Apple Archive Utility version on your computer can cause problems opening GTAR files.
Other Causes of GTAR File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Apple Archive Utility will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening GTAR files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
