Understanding JNLP Issues
Typical JNLP Opening Challenges
Apache OpenOffice Isn't There
When you double-click your JNLP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Apache OpenOffice for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your JNLP with Apache OpenOffice, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your JNLP, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Apache OpenOffice Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Apache OpenOffice installed that's incompatible with your Java Web Start File type. Installing the latest version of Apache OpenOffice from Apache Software Foundation is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your JNLP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening JNLP files are due to having the incorrect version of Apache OpenOffice installed on your computer.
Additional JNLP Opening Issues
Although you might already have Apache OpenOffice or another JNLP-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Java Web Start File files. If you are still having problems opening JNLP files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry JNLP file paths that are incorrect
- The JNLP file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the JNLP format
- Something has caused file corruption of your JNLP
- Malware-tainted JNLP file can't be opened
- JNLP-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows cannot load your Java Web Start File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
