Understanding MOBI Issues
Troubles Opening MOBI Files
Calibre Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MOBI Files" when trying to open your MOBI. Customarily, this means that Calibre is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your MOBI because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your MOBI file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of Calibre
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Calibre installed that's incompatible with your Mobipocket eBook Format type. If you do not have the proper version Calibre (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Mobipocket eBook Format file was created by a different (newer) version of Calibre than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the MOBI file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening MOBI files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other MOBI File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of Calibre installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MOBIs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MOBIs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid MOBI file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the MOBI file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a MOBI-associated program (eg. Calibre)
- MOBI file corruption
- Malware-tainted MOBI file can't be opened
- MOBI-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Mobipocket eBook Format file
