Troubleshoot BAT Files

Common BAT Opening Problems

Notepad++ Not Present

When you double-click your BAT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Notepad++ isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your BAT because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you don't have Notepad++ installed, and you know of another program to open your BAT file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of Notepad++ is Installed

In other instances, your DOS Batch File file version may not be supported by your version of Notepad++. Download the latest Notepad++ version from the Don Ho website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your DOS Batch File file was created by a newer version of Notepad++ than you have on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your BAT file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Notepad++ version on your computer can cause problems opening BAT files.

Other Causes of BAT File Opening Problems

Assuming you have the right Notepad++ version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening BAT files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening BATs. Other contributing causes:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for BAT are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the BAT file in the Windows registry
  • Defective install of a BAT program, such as Notepad++
  • File corruption affecting your BAT file
  • Malware-tainted BAT file can't be opened
  • Drivers associated with BAT software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your DOS Batch File file
